- Tenants Move Into Hawthorne Redevelopment
PORTLAND, Ore. – Apartments on the site of a longtime restaurant and music venue that was demolished last summer have begun leasing to new tenants.
Located at 1435 SE Hawthorne Blvd. and called the “Langano Apartments” in an apparent homage to one of the establishments that formerly occupied the site, the mixed-use building features studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartment units that have now hit the market.
Studio apartments are available for rent starting at $1,175 per month, while a one-bedroom is listed at $1,375 per month. Tenants of the building, according to the rental listing, are “fortunate enough to be able to immerse themselves in the true Portland living experience” including experiencing the “vast eclectic mix of local businesses” the “dynamic, artistic, deep-rooted” Buckman neighborhood has to offer.
Jarra’s Ethiopian Restaurant and Langano Lounge closed last spring, after Petros Jarra and Ainalem Sultessa, founders of the restaurant and owners of the building, made the decision to redevelop the property.
For many longtime Portlanders, Langano Lounge represented “a part of Portland that is rapidly fading from existence,” wrote Willamette Week.
Demolition of the two-story 1904 building occurred over the summer.
In place of the 110-year-old building the developers built a four-story 30-unit mixed-use apartment building with retail at the ground level. Construction began in the fall and wrapped up in the spring. The applicant on the project was Carrie Strickland of Works Partnership Architecture.
The former owners of the restaurant retain ownership of the redeveloped property under the name Langano Apartments LLC registered in Happy Valley.
No retail tenants, eclectic or otherwise, have yet moved in.
